My Top Ten Travel Destinations

If there is one thing I am constantly thinking about it is pizza… I mean traveling. I am forever looking up flights to places and dreaming of where I want to go next. Texas is my home but I always want to be somewhere different exploring the world. It was very hard to come up with my top ten places because I want to go everywhere. I don’t discriminate… I want to experience this entire world… the good and the bad. Mainly because I love finding the good in anything. Put me in the hood or put me in a five star hotel I will make the best of it. These are in no particular order except number one. NO PEEKING! Here are my top ten places:

10. Greece – I know this is a very cliche country to visit. It is on most women’s travel list. I typically travel…

The Speechless Storyteller

Quill & Quest

It’s a weird feeling. The momentwhen you’re looking around and you simultaneously want to describe everythingyou’re seeing and feeling to everyone you know, but yet somehow can’t seem to find the right words.

It happens when you least expect it. One second you’re trudging uphill, out of breath and unable to concentrate on anything except how much your feet hurt, the next second you’re rounding a corner and your breathing stops and your feet stop moving — only it’s not because of the pain. It’s because you just came around a corner and saw something so beautiful you remember why you bothered to walk on through the pain in the first place.

It was for this moment, though you were never sure exactly when this moment might be, that you kept going for. That you pushed yourself for. That for which you decided, “This is all worth it.”

And you’re…

Angelyne, the Billboard Queen

Maryanne Christiano-Mistretta

Angelina billboardSunset Boulevard billboard

Yesterday I was in one of those “Whatever Happened To?” modes and was thinking about Angelyne, the billboard queen of the 1980s who became a Hollywood icon by having a billboard of herself.

Her life was pretty mysterious and you can’t find too much information via Google.

She came from out of nowhere but did a few music videos (really good, like a cross between Blondie and Missing Persons and Berlin) and cameo appearances in movies, most famous, “Earth Girls are Easy.” But then she also did some low budget films in the 1970s. She also sang in a band called Baby Blue.

Angelyne didn’t have a rich husband who paid for these billboards, she was single and said the money came from investors. She was also a candidate in a 2003 California recall election.

No one knows the  real age of this eccentric lady. In some…

A Day in Alexandria Bay

The River Blogger

Uncle Sam Boat Tour

IMG_6922The best time to take in the sights of Alexandria Bay is in early autumn, after the tourist season, and the kids have returned to school. I try to get a trip on the St. Lawrence River at least once a year, through Uncle Sam Boat Tours.  On this day, I chose the Two Island Nation tour.  Over two hours long, it is entertaining and educational.  I have taken these tours about a dozen times and I learn something new about the region every time.

Riley’s on the River

imageI chose this restaurant for lunch because it was in close proximity to the Uncle Sam Boat Tours.  The food here is what I would call simple elegance.  I ordered a shrimp cocktail appetizer and four collassal shrimp appeared in glass vessels that also contained horseradish sauce with big chunks of lobster meat!  I shared them with…

Chilling at Central Perk

The first episode of Friends aired a month before I was born. I started watching it when I was ten. Up until now, I keep watching and re-watching it…after all, who could get bored with it?

One thing that I’ve always wondered about when watching an episode of Friends is how it would feel like to sit in Central Perk, their coffee shop hangout. Last week, during a VIP Studio Tour at Warner Bros Studios, I got the chance to do just that.

It is smaller than it seemed on camera, but there are various movie tricks they used to make it seem big. The actor of Ross Geller, David Schwimmer, is a very tall guy and he could walk from the door to their sofa in three strides. He always had a line when he walked in to divert our attention from the fact that he crossed the room so…

The Queen Mary

A Note From Abroad

Monday, March 2nd ~ On board the Queen Mary

The Queen Mary The Queen Mary

I was so excited to have my sister and brother-in-law stop by on their way to Arizona. Their time with us was limited, and we opted to take a day trip to Long Beach to tour the Queen Mary. Built by Cunard line in Clydebank, Scotland, she was originally known as job #534.

Although Cunard had maintained a legacy of naming their ships with names ending in “ia” such as Mauretania, Aquitania and Berengeria, legend has it that the tradition was ended due to a miscommunication of sorts.

“As per protocol, legend states that the Cunard directors went to ask King George his blessing of the ship’s proposed name saying, “We have decided to name our new ship after England’s greatest Queen,” meaning Queen Victoria, the King’s Grandmother. Upon which the King is reported to have stated, “My…
